Proofreading, reviewing and revising
Much confusion surrounds these terms. According to BS EN 15038 proofreading means to read through the target language without reference to the source language to check spelling, punctuation etc.; reviewing means to examine the target text to verify its suitability for the agreed purpose and to recommend corrective measures; and revising takes reviewing one stage further by requiring a comparison of the source and target texts.
Based on this definition, I feel that reviewing a target document and making changes without reference to the source document is potentially dangerous, so I offer a proofreading and revision service, for which I charge by the hour. I can review your text to ensure it is cohesive, clear and effective.
